At Military Brands, our dedication to serving and elevating the military community has reached a significant milestone. We are thrilled to announce that we are the first company to officially hire OCONUS military spouses to join our Editorial team through the SpouseWorks Fellowship.

Designed to help spouses maintain meaningful, upwardly mobile careers despite the inherent challenges of military life, the program (and Military Brands) is proving that career growth doesn’t have to stop when orders take a family overseas.

The SpouseWorks Fellowship is designed to bridge the gap between highly skilled military spouses and civilian employers.

It connects spouses with participating host companies based on their education, professional background, and the employer's needs, providing a clear pathway to long-term employment.

Unlike standard job applicants, candidates entering this fellowship go through a rigorous preparation process. Lyndsey Moya, a representative from the Military Spouse Employment Partnership (MSEP), explains the unique value of these candidates:

"The military spouses who are applying for fellowships... have been vetted specifically. Every one of them has worked with a career coach and has been coached on what they're looking for, what they're qualified for on their resume, on their interviewing skills, and what the expectations are for the fellowship program."

Because the program is fully subsidized during the 12-week period, it creates a seamless, risk-free way for companies to integrate diverse, world-class talent into their teams.

Crucially, the SpouseWorks Fellowship is open to spouses stationed globally. It equips participants with hands-on experience, professional coaching, and the flexibility needed to build portable careers that thrive regardless of where the military sends their family next.

What This Milestone Means to Us

Hiring OCONUS spouses represents a massive step forward in breaking down geographical employment barriers. Living overseas often presents military spouses with some of the most difficult hurdles in the job market, including strict Status of Forces Agreement regulations, time zone differences, and a lack of local career-level opportunities.

Moya noted that Military Brands' willingness to navigate these hurdles provides a vital blueprint for other employers,

"Now that we have opened this gate and [Military Brands] did whatever they needed to do to get these OCONUS spouses able to work a fellowship, now we have this partner...that can answer some of those questions. I think it…put Military Brands up on a pedestal a bit because they've gone through this process first."

By bringing OCONUS spouses onto our Editorial team through the SpouseWorks Fellowship, we are reinforcing our core belief: remote, flexible, and meaningful work should have no borders. It means that we don't just tolerate the military lifestyle; we build our operations around it, ensuring that military families have access to stable, fulfilling careers regardless of their duty station.

Military spouses bring a combination of resourcefulness, adaptability, and resilience that makes them a profound asset.

At Military Brands, OCONUS Spouses Are Invaluable

For Military Brands Editorial leadership, blazing the trail with these new hires was an easy decision. Military spouses bring a combination of resourcefulness, adaptability, and resilience that makes them a profound asset.

Military Brands Vice President Suzanne McCurdy explained,

“Opening opportunities for OCONUS spouses isn't just another hiring initiative; it's another way we're fulfilling our mission of ensuring military families can build fulfilling careers, no matter where military life takes them.”

As Moya emphasizes, navigating the unpredictability of military life naturally hones highly sought-after professional traits,

"Military spouses go through a lot of change at the drop of a hat. They are very adaptable because they have to be. They just possess a very certain, special skill set that other people don't.
And I think that is the education piece that needs to happen with employers, to open their eyes and say, 'They are a very special candidate for you to give a chance.'"

A Model for Employer Support

By breaking the OCONUS barrier, Military Brands is setting a new standard for employer support nationwide. True support goes beyond vocal appreciation. It requires putting tangible, seeable resources into practice to help spouses hold and keep their employment.

As Moya highlights, the ultimate goal of these efforts is to create a lasting, structural change in the job market,

"Our whole entire goal for the partnership, obviously, is to chip away at that unemployment rate for military spouses, and I think this will help significantly."

As a proud MSEP partner and a champion of the SpouseWorks Fellowship, Military Brands plans to continue inviting OCONUS military spouses to join our Editorial team in both leadership and content production roles.

We hope our success serves as a beacon to other companies nationwide, showing that hiring OCONUS spouses isn't just possible; it is a strategic advantage that brings world-class talent to your front door.
